CHOICE member Teresa says she bought a demonstration car from a dealership and was only given one key after she paid. When she asked for the second key they said if the car is used the dealership doesn't always get two keys. After finding out a replacement key would cost several hundred dollars, she argued with head office and finally received an extra key at no cost.

In many cases these codes are not provided to car owners, and are held either by the dealers or in some cases the manufacturers overseas, effectively locking independent mechanics, auto electricians and auto locksmiths out of the market. Auto locksmiths can't provide a replacement service for some car brands or have to invest in expensive diagnostic equipment to work without the code. This cost is passed on to customers.
The model of your car is important in determining the car key duplication cost because your car model directly influences the car key model that you have. This will determine the type of key blank you should use. In some cases, the brand of the key blank that you need will be the average cost of other key blanks, but sometimes it might be much more. This instance normally arises when you need a duplicate car key for a really old car model, a luxury car, or a car key that has additional features that most traditional car keys do not have.
In certain states, private citizens can own code cutting and key duplication machines. This type of investment does not make much sense for people who are not security professionals. Also, you will need certain levels of clearance to gain access to programs that enable you to find key codes from the VIN of a vehicle. The most DIY that you could go is to use a file or cutting tool, and measurements to cut a key by hand. Without years of specialty experience, being successful in this way is very unlikely. I would not recommend that you use any DIY methods for car key cutting. There is a lot that could go wrong, and this will potentially create bigger issues than it would solve.
These days most keys have an inbuilt transponder use to prevent theft. This transponder electronically communicates with the vehicle. If the transponder key isn’t programmed to match with the car, then the car won’t start. Most modern cars require these types of keys. If you lose your keys, not only will they need to be recut, they will also need to be reprogrammed.
I bought a new/used Buick Enclave and the previous owner lost the spare keys and broke the fob. My nephew warned me that replacement fobs only work if I have the dealership program the fob and cut the keys. I required the dealer to program and cut the keys for me for free. They work great and are about $150.00 less than the what the dealership charges for a new set + programming.
There was a lot that changed before the dawn of the 21st Century. A great number of these changes were technological advancements that also made their way into the automotive industry. It was around this time that many car manufacturers began to use transponder chips in their keys. This simple act makes cars much harder to steal and also makes keys harder to duplicate. The chip works by emitting a signal to a receiver that is housed in the ignition. In the instance that the wrong key is used (i.e the wrong signal is detected), the car will not start.

A local locksmith may charge $1.50-$4 for a standard key, but will have a much larger inventory of key blanks than chain or hardware stores, and the employees are usually well-trained on how to copy keys. Costs will vary based on the wholesale price of the specific type of key blank needed, the prevailing local rates and the amount of competition in the area. Copying a luggage key starts around $5-$7 and goes up depending on the brand (and there's often a discount for additional copies of the same key). Duplicating a safe or skeleton key starts around $5-$7 each and goes up, depending on the brand of key blank needed. http://thecarlocksmith.co.uk/carkeycutting/images/Car-Key-Cutting-Honda_78.jpg
If you're the type who frequently loses keys, you might be able to save money on the programming by creating a third key to have as a spare. If you already have two keys, a number of vehicle brands will allow you to program a third key on your own. You can have a locksmith cut this "emergency" key and then you follow the procedure for programming, which can frequently be found in your owner's manual. If the manual doesn't show you how, try searching online for the procedure. Try "How to program a (insert your year, make, model) key" as your search terms.
Switchblade keys have shanks that fold into the fob when they're not in use and pop out with the press of a button. They can have a basic cut or a laser cut. One small advantage of the switchblade key is that its components can be purchased separately. If for some reason your key is damaged and no longer works, you can buy the shank separately for roughly $60-$80. But the more likely scenario is that you've lost your key, in which case you'll need both it and the fob into which it folds. This can cost between $200 and $300, once you factor in programming of both components.
2. The transponder chip that is fitted within the key allows the vehicle to start and can be duplicated in two ways CLONING or PROGRAMMED. Cloning is the most common form of transponder duplication but both forms do require specialist duplication devices. Mister Minit invests in top of the line equipment to ensure your key is duplicated to the highest standard.
